22/04/2008 - THE DATE IS APRIL 23RD

THE DATE IS: 23RD APRIL

It is St. George’s Day, the anniversary of William Shakespeare’s claimed birthday in 1564 (he also died on same date in 1616) and the Big O Roy Orbison’s birthday in 1936.

25 years ago Wembley was beckoning a week on for The Yeltz and their first ever FA Vase Final. The Club was receiving local, regional and national media coverage but, meanwhile, we set off for a West Midlands League match at Gresley Rovers. Another memorable occasion was about to be etched into our history.

Manager Paddy  Page was at the time rotating his squad to rest players for the big Wembley occasion and also to cope with a massive fixture backlog which would see this season extend to 23rd May, following success also in the Worcestershire & Birmingham Senior Cups and the League Cup. 59 matches were played, 170 goals scored.

Players were trying to stake a claim in the Wembley line-up and one of those was left full-back, Les Prosser, who took his place as substitute in our line-up at Gresley:

Les came on in the second half to smash in a goal that was so stunning it was the subject of an affectionate report on www.yeltzland.net. The writer is now exiled in Spain so we expect he’ll be raising a special glass of Rioja to toast the celebration of the silver anniversary of the event today and every Yeltz fan should join him. Wherever you are today LES, CHEERS!!

The annual Halesowen Town FC fun walk took place on Sunday 6th April over the Clent Hills. Although there was a disappointing turnout, the 26 walkers, who included 3 children under 7 years old and 1 under 11, had great fun in the 4 inches of snow that had fallen overnight.
Organisers Ron & Joan Moseley wish to thank all the walkers and marshals who helped. £100 was raised for charity and £100 for the football club.
